April 20, 2003

Outside, I am jubilant and joyous,
I smile, I laugh with crinkled eyes.
But really, from within,
a little girl stares at you with steady eyes,
solemn face, pursed lips.
She sits and stares,
Cornered on a room.

She wonders how,
as you shrug her off
for the others,
turn away,
become distant,
that trust was bestowed upon you.
Thoughts and fears,
Past, present and future.
These stories lay deaf upon your ears.

Do you laugh to humour me?
Cry for pity?
Sigh. Sweet sighs.
For this pathetic soul.
Turn away, be gone and done.
Wash your hands of this girl.
For you are as much my friend
as I am yours.
